Licensed Product Designer
A licensed product designer creates the style guides and artwork that licensees turn into products. They build patterns, icons, type treatments and color palettes from approved character or brand art, and deliver production ready files for apparel, toys, home, stationery and other categories.
It is a design role in service of other people’s products: the job is to make the brand easy to use well.

Where the role sits
The designer feeds product development.
The style guide is what every licensee designs from. Good guides mean fewer revisions for everyone downstream.
The brand or franchise direction, and the category plans.
Patterns, layouts and production ready files for every target category.
THIS ROLEStyle guides and asset packages, ready to design from.
Assets released by email and shared drives. When partners work from an old file or the wrong version, the product fails approval and the launch slips.
How success is measured
Five KPIs for a licensed product designer.
Few job ads define success for this role. These are the measures Flowhaven recommends.
| KPI | How to calculate it |
|---|---|
| Style guide delivery | Guides and asset packs delivered by the date licensees need them |
| First time approval rate | Share of licensee submissions using the guide approved without revisions |
| Asset questions | Licensee questions or file requests per guide released |
| Category coverage | Target categories with ready to use artwork in the current guide |
| Revision rounds | Rounds of internal feedback before a guide is signed off |
Best practices
What great licensed product designers do.
Design for the factory, not the screen
Files that print, embroider and mold well.
Write the rules into the guide
Do and don’t examples cut rework later.
Version every asset
And retire old ones so partners never use the wrong file.
Release assets in one place
Not by email.
Ask what fails approval
And fix it in the next guide.
